Another interesting aspect of John and his business is that we had written quotes in the beginning. These should have covered all of the work that was to be done, and the pricing. Not a contract, but close enough that I would have a better chance pursuing legal remedies. Throughout the initial planning of this project, we had several errors and/or omissions in the quotes, so John would take them back to correct them, and then meet with us again with the new copy. Well, when the dust settled, we didn't have a written quote anymore. Shame on me for not pushing more, I guess I thought he was a trustworthy standup kind of guy. I was wrong.

Unfortunately, John abandoned the detached garage he started on my property. Really nice guy, and the crew he has working for him seem to be top notch (courteous, quality workmanship). However, it took about a year to get the work that was done completed. After that, John stopped answering his phone. After several weeks of daily calls, I figured the message was clear.

Bad

During initial talks with John, he promised his price would never go up, and also told us he was a 'pay as you go' contractor. We would pay for materials at each stage, and labor at the completion of each stage. He never did raise his price, instead he just walked away. In essence, he finished the profitable portion of the project, and then walked with about $7000 left in the budget, and about $15000 worth of work left to do (to be clear, John did not request the final $7000, nor was it paid to him).

Anyway, I would recommend avoiding this contractor based on the experience I have had. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Yet another year later, we are still working on finishing the project, and cleaning up the mess left behind. Along with the incomplete project, we were left with the concrete forms still in place, and several tons of concrete blocking a portion of my driveway.

This guy sucks you in, with his pricing and seemingly gentle mannerisms, but he is incompetent... He forgets to do important parts of his contracted duties, and has no idea what he's doing when he attempts it... John is a perfect example of hanging up a shingle that says he is a contractor, and being utterly clueless.. Stay away, unless you want to be chasing him to fix everything he screws up. That's if he ever calls you back..which he probably wont. He doesn't pick up the phone or call you back, to avoid having to fix his screw ups..
